In the midst of a global pandemic, an economic crisis, and tension from racial injustice, Renee Dion and Ryan Craycroft drop a balm for the human soul. Through “A Series of Events,” Craycroft plays as Dion writes and sings a plea, an outcry, a prayer for those just dealing with trying to stay alive from day to day in the midst of a world that is on fire.
Through the plea to not hear any more bad news, the outcry to have one moment of peace, at least in your own home, and the painted image of when the world finds its way inside the home, this duo offers a prayer.
The naked sounds of the guitar, bareboned soothing voice, and calming acoustics offer listeners the invitation to find solace and peace, even if only in your own home, especially in your own home, and at least within your own body.
As Craycroft matches her in tone, sound, and melody, Dion writes a love letter to the sacredness of her own mind and spirit, to the protection of her own home, the sanctuary and sanctity of her own haven, and thus, to the sacredness of humanity, and to the rest of the world. This project is a love letter to our own sacred inner sanctuaries.
Dion also writes a love letter to the love of her life. Through that love letter, listeners will hear a prayer for every Black person to make it back home to their loved ones. And once they do make it back home, all the bad news and hate from the world must stay outside. This is the call that inside the home, despite what series of events we might face, only love and peace belong.
In a world with so much pain, this is an invitation to do the opposite of what the world is doing; it is the call to turn inward into the homes we have built with our loved ones, and even to ourselves, and to love, to truly love.
